A compilation album about our pets, Pets Sounds, out this week via Skep Wax, is surely one of the most pleasant listens of this hot summer. A range of contemporary indie acts join forces here to sing about their animal companions. And given that purpose, it's safe to say that the record just breezes forward with a lot of affection in its grooves.
"Under a Cat" by The Catenary Wires and Brian Bilston is wry and smart, a clever rumination on the burdens -- literally -- of feline ownership. Elsewhere, the bright "Bo's New Haircut" from The Cords is pure pop goodness. "Foxy", a previously unreleased cut from Railcard, is shimmering and light, the hook as delicate, heartfelt, and ephemeral as some from Rachel Love's old band, Dolly Mixture. The warm "Rufus" by Tugboat Captain, and familiar gems from Special Friend ("Breakfast") and Swansea Sound ("I Don't Like Men in Uniform") offer more highlights of this record.
Fifteen acts singing about pets is a sweet idea. That it works says something about this label and the artists assembled. This is indie of the best sort, and there's a kind heart at work behind each of these tunes, and a nice idea behind the whole thing. Pets Sounds is pure listening pleasure for fans of any of the bands here, or for anyone eager to find something to play and smile about during the heat.
