London-based guitarist Robin Katz has shared an absolutely breathtaking cover of one of my favorite pieces of music ever. And this makes a special Christmas-y Track of the Week here too.
From the 1983 Nagisa Ćshima film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, this is the main theme by Ryuichi Sakamoto. The Yellow Magic Orchestra legend's score for that movie was something I loved before I ever saw the film mainly because David Sylvian was on the record singing "Forbidden Colours" with Sakamoto. This piece by Robin Katz is as poignant and affecting as you can imagine, with his guitar plucking out the main melody, and a string section adding warmth at a crucial moment in the piece.
"Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" by Robin Katz is out now via Gearbox Records. Details in the link below.
