Hold That Thought: A Quick Review Of The New EP From Fulton Lights (A. Spencer)

A few years ago, I was wowed by an EP from A. Spencer. A. Spencer is Andrew Spencer Goldman. He's made music in the D.C. area in a few projects, but Fulton Lights, his newest, might be his best work yet.

The new EP from Fulton Lights is called Well The Night Has Come and it's out now. Opener "Hold That Thought" sounds like the work of someone who's listened to a lot of Eighties Lou Reed, while the more thoughtful "These Notes Don't Break" is a ruminative run in the solo Robbie Robertson vein; there's even a slide guitar! The title cut is even better, placing Goldman's voice deep in the mix and adding in backing vocals and a very effective slide guitar. Fans of The War on Drugs should find this one up their alley.

Andrew Spencer Goldman is joined by some familiar names here on Well The Night Has Come, notably Jean Cook (Beauty Pill) who provides vocals and violin, John Davis (ex-Q And Not U, ex-Title Tracks) who provides backing vocals, and TJ Lipple (Aloha) on drums. Mixed by Tony Maimone of Pere Ubu, the whole EP has a rich sound that some may find pleasantly surprising given this area's fame for punk. The only problem with this Fulton Lights EP is that it's too short. So here's hoping Andrew Spencer Goldman follows this up with a full-length record soon.
