Down On Me: A Brief Review Of The New Album From Good Flying Birds

Indianapolis outfit Good Flying Birds have the market cornered this week on lo-fi inventiveness. Their newest, Talulah's Tape is sure to please fans of early GBV or The Olivia Tremor Control. Smartly rendered and performed, this is a fun record.

The DIY pop of "Down on Me" opens things, while the rush of "Pulling Hair" provides one of the highlights of the record. Built upon backwards tape loops, the song is like something from The Apples in Stereo or another Elephant 6 band so many years ago. Elsewhere, "Fall Away" churns up a few hooks that make it sound like peers Sharp Pins, among others.

Talulah's Tape is full of clever indie. There are a few moments here where an idea is pursued and wasted, but for the most part, this is a solid effort. It sounds ramshackle but it's also got all the charms of Bee Thousand or something. Highly recommended.
