Control: A Quick Review Of The New Album From Lorelle Meets The Obsolete

Haling from Mexico, new duo Lorelle Meets The Obsolete bring dark wave goodness with their new record. While Sonic Cathedral is thought of as a shoegaze imprint, their release of Corporal is sure to please fans of goth-flavored dream pop. It's also a record which will earn Lorelle Meets The Obsolete a lot of new fans too.

On numbers like on lead single "Control", Lorena Quintanilla and Alberto González seem to be taking cues from NIN, Fad Gadget, and maybe Garbage. The cut is heavy, and direct in its malevolence. Elsewhere, "Palabra" benefits from drums from Alvaro Castro. The mix of live drums and synths gives this one and a few here a hint of the flavor of peak Gary Numan. On "Regresar / Recordar", Lorena sings with the kind of cool insouciance that one found on the best records from Ladytron. The pulsing "Casi no estar" is breathy and hypnotic, and another highlight.

Lorelle Meets The Obsolete have a band name which sounds like a Seventies Art Rock group, but the sounds here are decidedly more New Wave inspired. At their best on Corporal, they work up a fever-dream of churning hooks atop supple synth-riffs. The effect is one that should please anyone who listened to early New Order, or Nitzer Ebb, or Ministry before they went louder.

Corporal by Lorelle Meets The Obsolete is out this week via Sonic Cathedral. Details below.
