I'm always a little worried that younger people are not interesting in starting rock bands anymore and sometimes pleasantly suprised when a new one pops up. Hailing from Rockville, Maryland, Doll Apartments are a bunch of upstarts blending pop punk and snatches of Nineties-inspired emo to serve up fresh and catchy rock. Today we're featuring one of the tracks from their debut album.
Songs like "Converse" reveal real debts to emocore acts from earlier years, but "Subaru Girl" is more direct and fun. There's a hint here of the kind of spunky alt-rock that Scottish band The View put out on their first clutch of singles too. Lior "Kiki" Gazit (vocals, rhythm guitar), Asher Zuckman (lead guitar), Cameron Gregory (drums), and Simon Kim (bass) bring a lot of energy to this, and the cut has a real spark. The video, shot by the band's manager Dominic Mukherjee, is simple but full of clever touches. If you had seen this on MTV2 a few years ago, it would have caught your eye (and the tune, your ear). There's more stuff like this on the debut from Doll Apartments, and a bit more too. Check it out now after you rock out with this one.
