I'm really happy to be featuring a new song and video from Great Lakes here today. The Athens, Georgia group, centered around Ben Crum, were part of the second wave of Elephant 6 bands, and they favored an intimate yet vigorous sound. That sound is what anchors their new record, Fear of the Fear, out later this month.
The title track is what we're hearing today and the tune is, like the rest of the album, informed by grief. Ben Crum explains:
"Fear of the Fear is a collection of songs mostly about the death of my close friend, Ryan Trammel. As such, it deals thematically with loss and grief. A very personal album, it touches on feelings of anxiety, brokenness, and the role of the subconscious in our lives."
However, the crunchy guitars of this number make sure the song isn't too morose. It's robust stuff and a first taste of a recod that is sure to be something most readers of this site with need to have on their radar screens.
Fear of the Fear by Great Lakes is out on HHBTM Records on August 21.
