Since Shane Lavers decided to name his second album as Chanel Beads the same as his first, we're using the same photo we used in our review of the earlier one.
Thankfully, 2026's Your Day Will Come has different songs than 2024's Your Day Will Come. The heady mix of silence, drums, and synths makes "Drums Only" a striking opener here. While the indie rock leanings of "Outside Your Life" are more straightforward, the best stuff here, like "Song for the Messenger" finds Lavers leaning on complex layers of production more than pop hooks. A gorgeous number called "Tyler Richard" succeeds on the strength of the piano hook within it, and a quick internet search reveals the name belongs to a guy at the ACLU so mad props for that too. The wonderfully-titled closer "Beaten with Sticks" offers up a vibe I'd like to have heard more of. As it is, this eerie track is probably the best thing on the whole album as far as I'm concerned.
There's a sort of deliberate obfuscation here on this 2026 Your Day Will Come. It's an approach where numbers which would otherwise be more accessible, are rendered as more complicated things. Chanel Beads do make interesting music, though I suppose it wouldn't be quite as compelling without the layers of effects and production elements on top of the tunes. Fans of stuff like mid-period His Name is Alive or early Sebadoh will find portions of this as intriguing as I did. Now come up with a new album name next time, huh?
Your Day Will Come by Chanel Beads will be out this week from Jagjaguwar.
