In what is surely the most extraordinary bit of good music news this week, word is out that The Durutti Column will be releasing a new album in July.
Renascent will be out on the last day of July, and the first track is here now. "Liars" is a luminous bit of business, centered around Vini Reilly's inimitable guitar playing. The nearly-73-year-old has a way of evoking the deepest emotions with the most subtle of instrumental gestures. A Durutti Column record is one where a listener enters a unique world; it's no stretch to say that nothing else sounds like a Vini Reilly/Durutti Column release. And it's been that way for nearly 50 years now. To say that a new Durutti Column album is to be warmly anticipated is an understatement.
