It's been almost two years since the last Human Potential record. That one was favorably reviewed here, and I'm happy to report that the latest, Eel Sparkles is further proof that Andrew Becker (ex-Medications) is some kind of wiz as a one-man band.
"Sun-E Corporation Teenage Anthem" is a mouthful of a title but the tune itself is bright, a piece of sharply rendered synth-pop. Elsewhere, the nicely-titled "Practice Songs for the Unloved" mixes a Ronettes-y big beat with a nearly lush form of electronica, while the moodier "The Sightseer" keeps things churning forward on darker energy.
Most of the material on Eel Sparkles is fairly accessible. The more subdued "Street Sweeper's Daughter" suggests that Andrew Becker is light-years away from his time in Dischord band Medications because this is wonderfully evocative and complex electro-rock.
Eel Sparkles by Human Potential is out now. Details via Bandcamp below.
