Sweden has produced a lot of great bands. And the next one in that long line is Girl Scout. The group's prepping a new record for release on Friday, and it's aces.
The tunes from Girl Scout are emotive and full of brusque energy. "Same Kids" and "Simple Life" are real highlights here, winning over listeners with the same kind of vibe that the best Courtney Barnett material has, while "Keeper" is a bit more complex and moody. The combination of heartfelt vocals and a winning indie sound is what makes Girl Scout's music so instantly appealing. There's a little bit here on Brink that might make a listener recall stuff from The Beths. The energy in "Operator" is fun, and the pep of the brighter "Dead Dog" is even more invigorating. The swirling guitars of "Uh-Huh" may earn comparisons to Alvvays, a touring partner, but most of Brink finds Girl Scout charting their own course.
Girl Scout deserve a whole lot of attention. Their music is likely to earn comparisons from other reviewers much like that the ones offered here. And any comparison is not to diminish what's so special here but instead provide a hint that Girl Scout's music is just as good as that of a lot of bands you already likely love. If you like the kind of groups we rave about here, it's a good chance you're going to fall in love with Girl Scout quickly too.
Brink by Girl Scout is out on March 20. Details via the band's official website.
