Carlyn Bezic makes music that's similar to some of what we've heard from Meg Remy. That makes perfect sense since Carlyn has appeared on a U.S. Girls album a couple of years back. Bezic's new record as Jane Inc. is tagged as mutant disco online, and that makes some kind of odd sense. This is knowing appropriation of that past floor-filler form for a modern spin on dance-pop.
The new Jane Inc. record is the awkwardly-titled A Rupture A Canyon a Birth and it opens on a very promising one-two punch of pop. "Reborn (On the Dancefloor)" and the very Kylie-like "Elastic" are DIY attempts at a big sweeping disco vibe. And they sort of work. After all, Lady Gaga started from a similar place as this. Carlyn keeps things intimate, even as the synth-hooks and drum patterns make you want to get your ass on the dancefloor. The radio-ready "Freefall" reminds one of early Madonna singles, but there's a neat Eighties slant to this one that is more New Wave than anything else.
This new Jane Inc. record works best as a sort of tribute to disco and past dance divas. It's so in thrall to that stuff that some indie fans will likely be taken aback by how much this sounds like the points of comparison I've mentioned above. However, it's still a DIY effort, and try as she might, Jane Inc. with her bedsit dance-pop isn't going to get folks on the floor with quite the speed as Kylie, Madonna, or Lada Gaga. This is more music for the imagination, where you think about dancing, I guess.
